Most cleaning companies don't have the qualifications to properly clean the scene of a trauma incident. ABRA recognizes companies that meet very high standards of the bio-recovery industry.
Q: Can I use my regular cleaning or janitorial service to clean up blood or pathological waste?
A: Not unless you're regular cleaning or janitorial service has been properly trained and the company is equipped to handle bio-hazardous waste such as blood and body fluids. They also must have a contract with bio-hazardous waste trasportation company to remove and destroy the waste after clean up.
Q: Who pays for bio-recovery services?
A: Ultimately, the property owner is responsible for the cost of the services. In most cases however, home, business or auto insurance will cover the cost, minus the deductible of the policy.
Q: Can I have the employees of my business clean up after the police have cleared the scene?
A: Federal regulation # 29CRF1910.1030 states that no employee can be placed in a position to be exposed to blood spills or blood borne pathogens without the following requirements being met.
- They must have received proper bloodborne pathogen training from an approved trainer.
- The company must have a written bloodborne pathogen exposure control plan.
- The employees must be provided with personal protective clothing and equipment.
- They must have completed the series of Hepatitis "B" injections and been provided with an exposure evaluation.
- There must be properly marked containers to store and transport the waste from the site.
